About Canine Retreat

Welcome to Canine Retreat. Dog daycare with a difference.

Using our 16 years combined experience (James has worked with dogs since 2013 and Kristin since 2018) we have created a space for dogs to just be dogs. A place where dogs can unwind and decompress from their busy urban lives.

Our daycare is a place for dogs to learn how to find peace and calm within themselves while spending quality time with their own kind in a safe and structured environment. We achieve this by using our experience to create a world just for dogs.

Obedience will be a part of daily activities so we can teach all dogs to be handled safely for the welfare of dogs and handlers alike. The things we teach are basic commands like sit, down, stay, come and basic leash manners. We teach boundary control to safely handle dogs around gates and for loading and unloading in our dog van. We teach excitement control to help the dogs learn to operate in a calm state of mind. We teach this to help teach them boundaries and show them what is expected of them in their time with us.

We do all this on our rural Wairarapa property surrounded by forests and nature. A quiet place hidden away from the hustle of urban life. Using a dog yard built for purpose and grass training areas on our property we know we can help all dogs to better understand themselves and enjoy their time spent with us.

Our mission is to create a daycare in service to the dogs, with their welfare and wellbeing as our number one priority. With our experience and our mission we have created a daycare with a difference.

About the People

We are James and Kristin Nepia. The people behind Canine Retreat.

James first started working with dogs in 2012 and founded Kuri Companion in 2013, offering structured socialisation services. Kristin joined the business as a handler and our administrator in 2018.

In 2023, we closed our dog walking and training business, known as Kuri Companion, to find new dog training challenges.

From the beginning of 2024, we will be offering a dog daycare service and dog training services covering the Wairarapa Region.

We are also co-founders of Rogue Obedience, our competition obedience training club. We run Rogue alongside our friend and competition training mentor Luca of Welly Dogs.
